What is an avuncular DNA test?

An avuncular DNA test determines the biological relationship between an aunt or uncle and their niece or nephew. This test is almost always used to establish paternity when the alleged father is deceased or unavailable, but his full biological brother or sister is willing to be tested.

Can an aunt or uncle share enough DNA to prove paternity?

Yes. A full sibling of the alleged father shares about 25% of their DNA with their biological niece or nephew. By comparing the genetic markers of the aunt or uncle with the child, the laboratory can calculate a statistical probability of a biological relationship.

Does the child's mother need to participate in the test?
