DOT Testing & Compliance FAQs

Which federal agencies require DOT drug testing?

Our certified testing services strictly comply with the Department of Transportation (DOT) 49 CFR Part 40 procedures. We service employers regulated by the FMCSA (trucking and commercial motor vehicles), FAA (aviation), FTA (transit), FRA (railroads), and USCG (Coast Guard).

What drugs are included in a standard DOT 5-panel test?

The DOT specifically mandates a 5-panel drug test. This panel screens for Marijuana (THC), Cocaine, Amphetamines (including Methamphetamine and MDMA), Opioids (including Codeine, Morphine, Heroin, Hydrocodone, Hydromorphone, Oxycodone, and Oxymorphone), and Phencyclidine (PCP).

Do you offer a DOT Random Testing Consortium?

Yes. If you are an owner-operator or a transportation company in Southern California, managing random drug testing pools can be complex. We offer complete Consortium/Third-Party Administrator (C/TPA) services to ensure you meet your required annual random testing percentages seamlessly and remain audit-ready.

When is DOT drug and alcohol testing required?

DOT regulations require safety-sensitive employees to undergo testing in several specific scenarios: Pre-employment, Random screening, Post-accident (depending on the severity and citations), Reasonable suspicion/cause, Return-to-duty, and Follow-up testing.

What are the most common types of drug tests?

Employers and testing facilities primarily use four types of biological samples, depending on the required detection window:

  • Urine Testing: The most common method. It is highly practical and detects drug metabolites for hours to days after use (or weeks for heavy cannabis use).
  • Saliva (Oral Fluid): Best for detecting very recent use (within hours up to 48 hours). It is difficult to tamper with and is now formally recognized in 2026 federal guidelines.
  • Hair Testing: Used to identify long-term patterns of drug use. It provides a detection window of up to 90 days but is not useful for detecting very recent use (within the past few days).
  • Blood Testing: Measures active drug levels for current impairment. It has a very short detection window (minutes to hours) and is usually reserved for emergency, legal, or post-accident settings.
What drugs do standard panels test for?

Workplace screening usually utilizes standard or expanded panels:

  • 5-Panel Test (Standard): Typically screens for Marijuana (THC), Cocaine, Amphetamines (including meth), Phencyclidine (PCP), and Opioids.
  • 10-Panel Test (Expanded): Includes all 5-panel drugs, plus Benzodiazepines, Barbiturates, Methadone, and additional prescription or synthetic drugs.

2026 Federal Update: Due to rising workplace positivity rates, Fentanyl is now increasingly included in expanded panels and has been officially added to federal safety-sensitive drug testing panels.

How long do drugs and alcohol stay in my system?

Detection windows vary based on the drug, dose, frequency of use, and metabolism. General guidelines for urine testing include:

  • Amphetamines, Cocaine, & Opiates: Generally detectable for 1 to 4 days.
  • Marijuana (THC): 2 to 7 days for single use, but can remain detectable for 1 to 2 months or longer for chronic, heavy users.
  • Alcohol: Standard tests detect alcohol for 2 to 12 hours. However, specialized EtG (ethyl glucuronide) testing can detect alcohol metabolites for 24 to 72 hours after consumption.
Can a test result in a false positive? (CBD, Poppy Seeds, etc.)

Credible drug screening programs use a highly accurate two-step process to eliminate false positives. An initial immunoassay screen is performed. If it is non-negative, a highly specific GC/MS (gas chromatography-mass spectrometry) test confirms the exact substance, making false positives extremely rare.

What about CBD? Pure CBD will not cause a positive result. However, because OTC CBD products are largely unregulated, some contain trace amounts of THC which can trigger a positive marijuana test.

What about Poppy Seeds? Poppy seeds naturally contain trace amounts of morphine and codeine. Modern tests use elevated "cutoff" levels specifically designed to avoid flagging typical dietary intake (like eating a poppy seed bagel).

Can employers still drug test if marijuana is legal in my state?

Yes. Employers can generally still drug test for marijuana and maintain drug-free workplace policies, even in states where medical or recreational use is legal (like California). However, laws are evolving rapidly.

Some states now have employee protections that limit an employer's ability to take action based solely on off-duty, legal marijuana use unless the employee is in a safety-sensitive position. Because marijuana remains illegal under federal law, federal contractors and DOT-regulated employees (like CDL drivers) are always strictly prohibited from using marijuana, regardless of state law.
