Common Drug Testing Questions
What is the difference between a 5-panel and a 10-panel drug test?
A standard 5-panel test screens for the most common street drugs: Marijuana (THC), Cocaine, Amphetamines/Methamphetamines, Opiates, and PCP. A 10-panel test includes all of those, plus prescription medications that are frequently abused, such as Barbiturates, Benzodiazepines, Methadone, Methaqualone, and Propoxyphene.
How far back can a hair follicle drug test detect substance use?
Hair follicle testing offers the longest detection window available. While a standard urine test typically detects use within the past few days to a week, a hair follicle test can detect a pattern of repetitive drug use going back up to 90 days. This makes it highly effective for pre-employment screening and legal cases.
Why choose an oral fluid (saliva) test over a urine test?
Oral fluid testing is excellent for detecting very recent drug use (within minutes to up to 48 hours), making it the preferred method for reasonable suspicion and post-accident testing. It is also 100% observed during collection, which makes it nearly impossible for an individual to cheat, dilute, or adulterate the sample.
What happens if a drug test result is non-negative?
If an initial screen is non-negative, the sample is sent to an accredited laboratory for secondary confirmation testing using Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry (GC/MS). If confirmed positive, a certified Medical Review Officer (MRO) will contact the donor to determine if there is a legitimate medical explanation (like a valid prescription) before reporting the final result to the employer.
